While the electronic steering focuses the beam in the elevation (depth) and azimuthal (left-right) directions, the physical lens provides the fixed lateral focus and acts as the essential bridge for optimal acoustic transmission into the body.

• The lens provides a fixed focus in the lateral dimension (side-to-side) to narrow the ultrasound beam. This is crucial for improving lateral resolution—the ability to distinguish between two objects lying side-by-side.

• It acts as an impedance matching layer between the high-impedance piezoelectric elements of the array and the low-impedance patient tissue. This minimizes acoustic reflection at the probe-skin interface, ensuring maximum sound energy is transmitted into the body.

• The lens material forms the protective surface of the probe, shielding the sensitive piezoelectric array from external damage, gel, and contaminants.

• Due to its convex (curved) shape, the lens helps spread the acoustic beam over a wide area, which is essential for abdominal and OB/GYN imaging.
